Getting your immigration petition (Form I-130 or I-140) approved is a major milestone, but it’s not the final step. Many people are surprised to learn there’s still a long road ahead before getting a green card or visa.
Step 1: Petition Approval

- It means your family or employer relationship has been verified
Step 2: Visa Availability
- Immediate relatives of U.S. citizens can proceed immediately
- Others (e.g., siblings, married children) must wait for a visa number
- Check the Visa Bulletin monthly for priority date updates
Step 3: Consular Processing or Adjustment of Status
- If abroad: Go through National Visa Center (NVC) and U.S. embassy interview
- If in the U.S. legally: May file Form I-485 for Adjustment of Status
Step 4: Medical Exam and Interview
