Who Pays Your Medical Bills After an Accident?

After a car accident or slip-and-fall injury, medical bills start piling up fast. But who’s responsible for paying them — and when?

1. Your Health Insurance
Most hospitals will bill your private health insurance first, even if someone else caused the accident. But your insurer may later seek reimbursement from the at-fault party.

2. Auto Insurance (If It’s a Car Accident)

  • PIP or MedPay coverage may pay your bills upfront

  • The at-fault driver’s liability insurance will pay later

  • Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage helps if the other driver lacks coverage

3. The At-Fault Party
In most personal injury lawsuits, the at-fault person (or their insurer) ultimately pays — but only after a settlement or court decision.

4. Medical Liens
Some providers will treat you now and agree to be paid later from your injury settlement. This is called a medical lien.

Important Notes:

  • You’re responsible for your bills until the case is resolved

  • Don’t ignore bills — they can go to collections

  • Your lawyer can negotiate bill reductions
