How to Handle a Red Light Camera Ticket

Red light camera tickets are frustrating — often arriving weeks after the violation. But can you fight one? And what happens if you ignore it?

What Is a Red Light Camera Ticket?
These are automated traffic violations issued when a camera captures your vehicle running a red light. They include:

  • A photo of your license plate

  • Time/date of the infraction

  • A link to view the video evidence online

Is It a Real Ticket?
In most states — yes. Ignoring it can result in:

  • Fines (usually $50–$150)

  • Late fees

  • Collections

  • Possible license suspension (in some states)

How to Fight It:

  • Was someone else driving? You may be able to submit an affidavit.

  • Was the light yellow or red? Check the timestamp.

  • Were you turning legally on red?

  • Was the signage visible? If not, you may have a case.

Pro Tip:
Request calibration and maintenance records for the camera. A malfunctioning system may invalidate the ticket.

Pay or Fight?
Fighting may cost time, but if points or insurance hikes are involved, it’s worth considering.
